The Reetha Revival Project is a 3-month community initiative that revives traditional knowledge of Reetha (soapnut) and empowers rural youth and marginalized women in Nepal to turn it into eco-friendly, income-generating products like shampoo, playtime bubble solution, and soap.
This project is part of a larger mission of The Green Institute and Eco-revive research and innovation, to drive community-based solutions for sustainability. It embodies the institute's ethos of empowering individuals to create tangible environmental and social impact, aligning with its vision to nurture innovative approaches for a greener, more equitable future. It is an initiative dedicated to empowering rural and urban tenants in Nepal by training them to turn organic waste into bioenzyme, an eco-friendly alternative with versatile uses like cleaning and hygiene. By addressing waste management challenges and providing sustainable solutions, the project transforms waste into wealth while encouraging environmental stewardship and community empowerment.
This project is important because the Chepang community's ancient knowledge of forest resources is at risk as younger generations move away from traditional land stewardship practices. Documenting these skills through both nature journaling and documentary preserves valuable information and actively teaches scientific observation. Documentation offers practical tools to protect and value their collective wisdom, improve livelihoods through sustainable forest use, and elevate their story for new generations. Involving Chepang families as co-creators of scientific records bridges generational gaps and builds pride, while empowering teachers and youth to sustain nature journaling each year creates a living legacy. By establishing lasting community archives in the form of videos, this project ensures that the Chepang will continue to be strong stewards of both their cultural traditions and their changing landscape and connects them more closely with the nature.
